The 2024 World Video Game Hall of Fame finalists have been announced, and include classics like Resident Evil, Asteroids, and Guitar Hero.
Sponsored by the Rochester, New York-based Strong National Museum of Play, the museum is said to be the only collection-based museum in the world dedicated solely to the study of play. The World Video Game Hall of Fame is an international hall of fame that exhibits video games within the venue.

The public will vote for their favorite games on the World Video Game Hall of Fame website, and the top three games will be added to the ballot.
The final inductees will be announced on Thursday, May 9th.
Polygon quotes John Paul C. Dyson, director of The Strong's International Center for the History of Electronic Games, as saying, “Even 10 years later, it continues to have an enormous impact on pop culture and the gaming industry itself.'' There is no shortage of suitable candidates.” These games span decades.
“Asteroids is an arcade icon of the late '70s. Myst showed the potential of CD-ROM technology in the '90s. In the 2000s, Neopets became a staple of browser-based free-to-play games. And , Guitar Hero is not even 20 years old yet, but its staying power has already been proven,” he added.
Who are the World Video Game Hall of Fame finalists?
The finalists in this year's contest include games from across the decades, from Asteroids, released by Atari in 1979, to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, published by Activision in 1999.
It also includes the 1993 adventure video game Myst, the open-ended city-building franchise SimCity, and the handheld electronic game Pocket Neopets.
According to Softonic, since the series' introduction in 1996, the Resident Evil series has sold 150 million copies as of 2023, making it Capcom's best-selling franchise in terms of software sales.
During the height of its popularity, songs featured in the Guitar Hero game can increase downloads by as much as 843%.
The space trading game Elite introduced three major cornerstones of modern game development: an open-world format, wireframe 3D graphics, and procedurally generated levels.
In March 2008, popular video game magazine Next Generation declared it the number one best game of the 1980s, calling it a “spiritual forerunner of everything from Wing Commander to the Grand Theft Auto series.” It is said that.
Nintendo's action-adventure series Metroid made the list alongside fellow Japanese developer Konami's dating simulation series Tokimeki Memorial.
The final two chosen were Ultima, an open-world fantasy role-playing experience, and You Don't Know Jack, a game-turned-movie series.
Which games are in the Hall of Fame?
These games join icons like World of Pong, Super Mario Bros., and The Legend of Zelda.
Classic games such as DOOM, Pac-Man, Tetris, World of Warcraft, and most recently The Last of Us are already in the Hall of Fame.
