WNBA Draft 2024: Caitlin Clark selected first overall by Indiana Fever.Angel Reese joins Camila Cardoso on Chicago Sky

After a historic NCAA Tournament, the best players in women's college basketball took the next step Monday night at the WNBA Draft in New York.

Caitlin Clark started the night as the No. 1 overall pick for the Indiana Fever after helping Iowa to the national championship game in back-to-back seasons.

Clark finished his collegiate career averaging 31.6 points and 8.9 assists per game, both tops in the nation.

Stanford's Cameron Brink went next to the Los Angeles Sparks, while Tennessee's Camila Cardoso went third to the Chicago Sky.

After a stellar collegiate career at LSU, Angel Reese was selected No. 7 by the Sky and joined Cardoso in the frontcourt rotation.

It was a great night for the WNBA, with commissioner Cathy Engelbert saying she is “quite confident” the league will expand to 16 teams by the 2028 season.

Engelbert said Philadelphia, Toronto, Denver, Nashville and South Florida are potential landing spots for an expansion team.

  • Watching the Aces draft Kate Martin from the crowd was another fun moment. Martin entered the draft along with Iowa teammate Gabby Marshall to support Clark. She played five seasons after redshirting as a freshman and has been called the “glue” for the Hawkeyes to do everything they need. Martin's family wasn't in attendance, but after speaking with ESPN's Holly Rowe, she said Iowa head coaches Lisa Bruder, Ann Nizzi-Clark, Brent Clark, and Caitlin's brothers Colin and Blake I received a big hug from. Former Iowa Naismith champion Megan Gustafson is also in Las Vegas. The two attended the University of Iowa one year apart.

  • I think Daisha Fair is the perfect event for Las Vegas. Aces head coach Becky Hammon knows what it's like to be an undersized, overlooked point guard with the will to be great. For Fair, playing behind Chelsea Gray (who often takes on a coaching role in practice) and learning from Hammon could be a great learning opportunity. She ranks third all-time on the NCAA DI scoring list.

  • Nika Mule had a great defensive performance against Caitlin Clark in the Final Four. If she remains on Seattle's roster, she will likely learn from veteran point guard Skyler Diggins-Smith. It was a special moment for her and for her college teammates Paige Bakkers and Azzie Fudd, who obviously watched from the gallery.

  • Angel Rees goes back to his high school days and talks about the first time he played against his new teammate Camila Cardoso. She said she's looking forward to seeing Chicago's frontcourt duo play against the Los Angeles duo of Cameron Brink and Rikea Jackson.

  • There is one important point regarding back-to-back national picks by Dallas and Connecticut. Teams often draft these players and stash them, adding them to their roster in later seasons. They may have done so this year due to a lack of roster room or knowing that the remaining players on the Olympic and national teams are not yet ready to join the WNBA.
