The highly anticipated EA Sports College Football 2025 video game is set to launch on July 19th, and with a few teaser trailers now out, anticipation is at an all-time high. The game was famously forced to go on hiatus after players weren't paid, but is finally back due to name, image and likeness policies. It was already one of the most popular sports video games of all time, but with over a decade to go, the excitement is palpable.
We already know that the three athletes who will be on the cover of this year's video game are Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers, Michigan Wolverines running back Donovan Edwards and Colorado Buffaloes all-around wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter. If you pay a little more, Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe will appear on the cover of the deluxe edition.
With all the talk of the new game and cover, ESPN selected their cover stars from the 11 years the game was on hiatus. They selected former University of Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa as the cover athlete for NCAA Football 19, which was set to be released in the summer of 2018. Other nominees that year included Stanford running back Bryce Love, University of Houston DE Ed Oliver, and University of Wisconsin Badgers running back Jonathan Taylor.
ESPN's David Hale had this to say about the cover choice:
“While it would have been fun to see the Clemson Tigers defensive lineman grace the cover of the game in his famous Power Ranger costume, the story of the summer of 2018 was all about Tagovailoa. He was a rare combination of genuine stardom and unknown talent when he came off the bench at halftime of the national championship game to save Alabama from a looming crisis. The only problem with this choice was the reaction it would undoubtedly provoke from Nick Saban, who was less than keen to ignite a purported QB battle between Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts that summer. Of course, does anyone think Hurts would have stayed on the bench if the NIL rule had been in place in 2018?”
Other recipients include Florida State Seminoles wide receiver Rashad Greene (2015), Ohio State Buckeyes defensive end Joey Bosa (2016), Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey (2017), Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson (2018), Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence (2020), Louisiana State Tigers cornerback Derek Stingley (2021), Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei (2022), Georgia Bulldogs tight end Brock Bowers (2023) and USC Troy quarterback Caleb Williams (2024).
