BOSTON – A points redemption website is taking a look at where Boston residents are planning to travel this summer. Point.me's results show that there is a huge disparity between when people pay with their mileage points and when they pay with cash.
The points.me search engine helps you explore your personal credit card points and get the best rewards for your travels.
Turn points into cash
After looking at 7.4 million local searches, we found that most Boston residents want to save up points and travel to London, Paris, and Rome for summer 2024.
Point.me's Gilbert Ott says: “London is really lively in the summer, with all kinds of sporting events going on, including Wimbledon, cricket being played frequently, and many international The crowd will enjoy it. The weather is good for a while.”
pay by cash
The top destinations for summer 2024 have changed, after Point.me looked at what Boston residents searched for when buying plane seats with cash. Top destinations were New York City, Las Vegas and Dublin.
“I think New York is great,” Ott said. “Personally, I think it's better to go late summer than mid-summer. Enjoy the U.S. Open, Fashion Week, and all the good things that happen in September.”
Points.me found that most users who cash in their points are looking to use them in business class, where they can sleep flat and drink champagne before takeoff.
“I think people really like this dream-like state of being able to go somewhere special, regardless of money, and not having to worry about how much it costs to fly or where to go. I think there's a lot of truth in where you want to go, but points generally tell you where people really want to go,” Ott said.
If you want to cash in those miles, the website recommends booking early or at the last minute. Airlines looking to sell excess inventory can make significant mileage redemptions within 72 hours of departure.
