Keeping up with all the latest video games coming out is an increasingly complicated task, with multiple PC stores, Xbox One, PS4, Switch, mobile, and more to keep track of. But don't worry, I'm here to help. Every month, I'll be showcasing the games you should be watching, from big AAA titles to interesting indies that you might have overlooked.
June is definitely a big month for video game news, but it's not a huge month in terms of actual releases. That said, there are some promising titles on the way, such as Luigi's Mansion 2 HD and Atlus' major relaunch of Shin Megami Tensei V. Meanwhile, on the indie side, we can look forward to atmospheric horror game Still Wakes the Deep and stylish dungeon crawler #BLUD. Oh, and while we're not covering DLC in this article, we should at least briefly mention that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is releasing on June 21st.
Notes: We may have played demos or had early access to some of the games recommended in this article, but in most cases we have simply picked games that look promising and cannot guarantee the final product. Wait for reviews before purchasing.
So, here are the games to watch in June…
Headliner
Shin Megami Tensei V: Revenge (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, Switch, June 14)
Shin Megami Tensei V originally came out without much fanfare as a Switch exclusive in 2021, but now Atlus is giving the game another chance to shine. Shin Megami Tensei V: Revenge not only completely revamps the game's presentation for the more powerful platform, but it also adds an entire second story path, new areas, demons, and more. Atlus is considering this the new standard version of SMTV, so much so that they're removing the older Switch version from sale. Shin Megami Tensei V: Revenge is available to pre-order here.
Luigi's Mansion 2 HD (Switch, June 27th)
Continuing the theme of giving underrated games another chance, Nintendo released the 3DS exclusive Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon between the original Luigi's Mansion and the highly acclaimed Luigi's Mansion 3. A very ambitious game by 3DS standards, it's now been brought back in full force on Switch under the title Luigi's Mansion 2 HD. Fire up your Poltergust and check out the Luigi's Mansion game you may have missed. Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is available to pre-order here.
Promising Indies
#BLUD (PC, June 18th)
Looking for a Diablo-esque dungeon crawler without the dark and gloomy vibe? #BLUD might be just what you're looking for. The game combines dungeon crawling with vibrant, Nickelodeon-style animation (and some more violence than you'll find on Nickelodeon). Oh, and there are vampires! Check out the #BLUD Steam page here.
Still Wakes the Deep (PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, June 18)
A horror story can be made or broken by its setting, and Still Wakes the Deep, set on a giant, isolated deepwater oil rig off the coast of Scotland, has a fantastic setting. Developed by The Chinese Room, developers of Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs and Dear Esther, Still Wakes the Deep has some atmospheric walking sim-esque elements but also plenty of intense survival and otherworldly horror. It's indie horror on steroids. Here's Still Wakes the Deep's Steam page.
Until then (PC & PS5, June 25th)
Until Then is a beautifully handcrafted 2D narrative adventure that aims to immerse you in the dramatic world of high school students living in the Philippines. It's not just a relaxing game; it also has elements of magic and mystery that drive the story. Video games transport you to other worlds like no other medium can, and this game looks like it'll be a journey worth taking. Here is Until Then's Steam page.
Times & Galaxy (PC, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Switch, June 21)
As someone who's made a living from writing for 15 years, I can admit that writing isn't always that exciting, but I think Times & Galaxy does a pretty good job of making journalism fun. For starters, the game takes place in a fun sci-fi setting and features a “story-building” mechanic that turns writing into a kind of fun puzzle (I hope it actually is!). Here's the Steam page for Times & Galaxy.
