NC Hall announced the Class of 2024 last December.
within 22 years Skell, the UNC men's tennis team won 16 ACC championships outright, tied with two other teams. His teams had an overall record of 418 wins and 55 losses, and a league record of 132 wins and 14 losses. His teams in 1970 and 1971 won him five of his six singles titles in the ACC and all three doubles titles.
Skirkle also played at UNC, compiling an individual record of 60-1. Skirkle died unexpectedly in his sleep the night before the 1980 ACC Tennis Championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is also a member of the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame.
Joining Skakle as members of the Class of 2024 are, in alphabetical order, Randolph Childress, Sheila Ford Duncan, Caroline Lind, Bob McKillop, and Jim Nantz. pettis Norman, Shea Ralph, Steve Smith Sr., Marilyn “Ku” Tucker, and Ron Wellman.
“This year's class of North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame inductees is dynamic in many ways,” said Dr. Jerry McGee, Chairman of the Hall's Board of Directors. “Given that this is our 60th Commencement Gala, they are not only part of the milestone group, but also representative of the entire Charlotte community, North Carolina, the United States, and the rest of the world.”
