In this new episode of Techzine Talks on Tour, we spoke with Alex Stamos during the RSA conference. Stamos is the Chief Trust Officer of SentinelOne and, among other things, a professor at Stanford University and former Chief Security Officer of Facebook. We delved into the concept of trust with him.
Trust is a key element of our digital lives. It plays a role not only in our personal life but also in business life. Before entering into a relationship with a vendor, organizations need to know who they can trust. At least, that's how it should be. However, in reality, a lot of time is wasted on things like vendor risk management.
According to Stamos, the existence of vendor risk management and its accompanying forms is not a bad thing in and of itself. But it's far from realistic to think that potential problems with some kind of product or system based on tens or hundreds of millions of lines of code can be solved by someone filling out some spreadsheet. is.
know who to trust
One of the key questions we discuss during our conversations is how organizations can decide who to trust. It's a big issue that deserves a full discussion. We look at the role that major companies like Microsoft play in this regard. Should the company that develops Windows also be held responsible for cybersecurity? And how can cybersecurity companies prove to customers that they are trustworthy? In other words, with enough transparency? How do we provide this?
Another topic we discuss in this episode of Techzine Talks on Tour is how AI will impact the cybersecurity industry. Not only from a trust perspective, but also from an architecture and process perspective. Stamos believes the world is moving toward automated cybersecurity, largely thanks to AI. This gives the defender an advantage over the attacker, at least for a while.
Automation is critical because there is a tremendous amount of work that defending organizations need to do. Stamos said this also means the entire industry needs to move to a centrally coordinated way to collect and analyze data. Only then will organizations be able to adequately protect themselves. Although there is clearly an element of self-interest in this statement, we fundamentally believe that Mr. Stamos is not wrong. It's certainly a good concept to discuss.
