ST. PETER – The Worthington High School boys tennis team visited Gustavus Adolphus College on May 24 as a Section 2AA individual.
The Trojans had two players compete in singles and two in doubles: seniors Ian Barber and Evan Hunsberger in singles and the doubles teams of Lance Gordon and Caleb Barber and Bennett Oberlow and Dylan Dykstra.
Worthington's first singles competitor was Ian Barber, the No. 5 seed who played first against Bennett Greger of New Prague. Barber won that match 6-2, 6-3 to move on to face No. 4 seed Desmond Johnson of Mankato West, who he lost 6-2, 6-1.
The Trojans' second singles competitor was Hunsberger, who was selected by lottery for the tournament. He faced Shakopee's Jack Deegan and lost 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles, the team of Gordon and Caleb Barber placed first. They faced Luke Jacobson and Tarun Gopi of Prior Lake and lost 6-0, 6-0. Overlow and Dykstra placed second and lost 6-0, 6-0 to Maverick Johnson and Charlie Wideman of New Ulm.
Worthington's boys tennis season finished with an overall team record of 2-10. End-of-season awards saw Ian Barber, Caleb Barber and Diego Ramos-Rosa receive individual academic all-state honors. Ian Barber also earned All-Big South Conference honors and Hunsberger was named honorable mention.
The team awards followed with Ian Barber being named MVP, Hunsberger being named Most Valuable Player, Dylan Dykstra being named Most Valuable Player and Caleb Barber being named Most Valuable Sportsmanship Player.

JORDAN – The WHS boys and girls golf teams concluded their seasons Tuesday at the Section 2AAA tournament at the Ridges at Sand Creek Course.
Six Trojan golfers competed in both the boys' and girls' divisions, but neither team advanced to the second round on Wednesday.
Troy's boys team had a first round score of 366 total, placing them 13th, while the girls team had a score of 429, placing them 12th.
Waconia was the Section 2AAA boys team winner with a two-round overall score of 589, just one stroke ahead of second-place Chanhassen. Chanhassen's Lucas Arnsen took first place in the individual rankings with a final score of 141.
Senior Logan Powers had the lowest score among the WHS boys, placing 52nd overall with a score of 85. Fellow senior Andrew Mulder followed behind among the Trojan golfers with a first-round score of 91.
Junior Spencer Nickel and senior Wesley Widboom each shot 95, senior Jerret Larson shot 102 and junior Ryan Dorsey shot 107.
Minnetonka was crowned the girls champion with 637 points. The final individual leader was Ava Hanneman of Orono with 141 points.
On the girls side, senior Madison Beckman had the lowest score for the Trojans, earning a 90 in the first round and placing 18th in the round.
Freshman Claire Meyer placed 48th with a stroke of 107, junior Claire Mahlberg placed 57th with a stroke of 115 and senior Abrionna Irwin placed 64th with a stroke of 117. Senior Regan Shafer placed 128 and junior Peyton Nickell placed 129.

Mankato West 15, Worthington 0
MANKATO – The Trojan baseball team opened Section 2AAA postseason play on Wednesday against the powerhouse Mankato West Scarlets at ISG Field in Mankato.
The Scarlets entered the section playoffs as the top seed with a 15-3 record, including winning their first 11 games of the season.
Meanwhile, the Trojans finished as the eighth seed in the tournament with a 6-13 record.
The final result on Wednesday was a dominating 15-0 victory for the Scarlets, who advanced to the semifinals. Scarlets pitcher Wilson Majors threw a no-hitter, striking out 10 Troy batters.
Mankato West scored its first run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning, then added four more in the second inning, the Scarlets scored six more runs in the third inning to take an 11-0 lead, and then four more in the fourth inning before the game ended 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth.
Not only did Magers pitch a no-hitter, he didn't allow a single Troy player to reach base.
The Trojans' first pitcher was Tucker Brandner. He pitched two innings, allowing five hits and striking out two. Max Ostrem pitched one inning, then Aiden Stugelmeyer pitched the final inning. They each allowed three hits.
Of Mankato West's 11 hits, Benjamin O'Neill, Derek Stierlen and Mason DuRose each had two to lead the team.
The loss dropped the Trojans to the elimination group and they will face No. 5 seed St. Peter on Saturday at Mueller Park in New Ulm. The Saints beat the Trojans in a regular-season doubleheader on May 10.
