Travelers are embracing more experiential adventures rather than merchandise and souvenirs. Spending on experiences now accounts for 12% of tourism sales, the highest in at least the past five years as of March 2024, according to SpendingPulse Destinations, which measures in-store and online retail sales across all payment methods.
At least the number of people going out to sea by boat is increasing. Global cruise passenger transactions in the first quarter were approximately 16% above 2019 levels. The boom in cruise demand can also be seen at major ports. The Bahamas Islands, for example, saw an increase of 2.9 million passengers arriving by sea over the past 12 months compared to 2019 levels.
Over the past 12 months, Japan has emerged as a front-runner among global travel destinations. Munich ranks among the top trending destinations this summer.
California seems to be the top choice in the country.
