Jamestown did not respond Friday night for Edward Dyson III and Arsenio Arrington.
The Albany duo scored 60 points on 24-of-37 shooting as the Patrons defeated the Jackals 119-107 in a basketball league game at the Jamestown Community College Athletic Facility.
In the Atlantic Northeast Division, Dyson scored 35 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, Arlington added 25 points and four blocked shots, and third-place Albany improved to 7-3.
“One of our struggles lately has been matching our physicality. A lot of teams recognize that we can play, so they're going to be very physical against us. It’s crazy,” Jamestown head coach Raheem Singleton said after the game. “We’ve been struggling with that adjustment.”
David Jasson came off the bench to score a team-high 21 points, and No. 5 Jamestown lost its third straight game to fall to 5-6.
Albany led for more than 22 minutes in the first half, but Jamestown's Derrick Colter scored with 1:30 left in the second quarter to tie the game at 49-all. The Patrons then went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by three-point plays from Trevis Wyche and Dyson, leading 57-49 at halftime.
“I can't say it was tough defensively. … I think their physicality rubbed off on us,” Singleton said. “It's tough. I'm trying to get the players to understand that if you want the referees to make different calls, you have to adapt to their physicality.”
The Jackals cut the deficit to two points early in the third quarter with an 8-0 run that included a 3-pointer by Joshua Dominguez and another bucket by Colter, but Albany lost with another 3-pointer by Dyson. They responded with a 13-0 run that included shots. And a putback by Jaquan Newton after missing two Patrons free throws.
“The whole point is just toughness. They weren't very big, they had some tall guys, but they didn't play physical. They had one guy play in the post, but their guard is ours. He played physically for his size,” Singleton said. “I actually felt like if our big team really played strong, we had an advantage inside.”
Jamestown's Connor Kelly, who finished with 18 points, made a 3-pointer with 39.6 seconds left in the third quarter to cut the deficit to two, but Albany again went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter, capped by Newton's three. I decided. -The point play showed 1 second left and the score was 82-74 going into the 4th quarter.
The Patrons started the final 12 minutes on a 9-0 run, and the Jackals never got closer than 12 minutes left.
“It's a run game, but everyone on our team knows that defense is important for us,” Singleton said. “Making sure our players can sit and park is something we didn't do today and they made us pay.”
Colter entered the game ranked ninth in the league, scoring 24.1 points per game, but finished with just 13 points. Albany's Jamil Hood Jr. was the primary guard in the second half, scoring just five points.
The Patrons made 46 of 81 (56.8%) field goals and outscored Jamestown 60-46 in the paint.
Albany also scored 19 points off 20 Jackals turnovers.
“I feel like our guys let off the gas a little bit because they felt like they weren't going to get fouled,” Singleton said.[The patrons]were constantly attacking, attacking, attacking. I think that was the difference in points due to turnovers. ”
Jamestown returns to action tonight with a trip to Canada to take on the Kitchener-Waterloo Titans in nonleague action. Next Friday, the Jackals will host the Grass City Wranglers at 7 p.m., and next Sunday, the Tri-State His Admirals will visit the athletic complex at 3 p.m.
Notes: Stephon Auguste had 11 points and Brent Price and Lorenzo Collier each had 10 points for Jamestown. Troy Baker led the Jackals with eight rebounds. …Jamestown made 39-of-82 (47.6 percent) from the field, including 10-of-27 (37 percent) from 3-point range. …Albany won the rebound battle 46-44.
