MINECRAFT is the most popular game on the planet, with over 300 million copies sold and played by millions every day.
The game will be available on almost all platforms, including PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android, and will offer cross-play multiplayer between platforms.
But it's more than just a video game: a live-action Minecraft movie is in the works, starring Jack Black.
Now, to further expand the franchise, developer Mojang has partnered with Netflix to produce a new animated series.
As part of Minecraft's 15th anniversary celebrations, the two companies announced a new animated streaming series based on the video game.
The series will feature an original story with new characters and promises to paint a fresh look at the world of Minecraft.
The Netflix Minecraft series will feature CGI animation from WildBrain, the animation studio behind other Netflix animated series such as Sonic Prime and Carmen Sandiego, which are also based on video games.
No details such as a release date or plot summary have been announced, but the series is said to be currently in development, so it likely won't be long before more details are revealed.
The new series will be available exclusively on Netflix and will be available exclusively on Netflix in most territories where Netflix is available.
This isn't Minecraft's first foray into storytelling, as the game previously had an interactive media experience called “Minecraft: Story Mode” developed by Telltale Games.
Minecraft also collaborated with David Attenborough's Planet Earth earlier this year to provide in-game content for an educational version of Minecraft aimed specifically at students.
