Doug Cockle, who provides the gruff voice of Geralt in CD Projekt Red's The Witcher video game, shares his thoughts on the Netflix series.
In an interview with YouTube channel Behind the Voices, Cockle said there were some “choices” made in the writers' room regarding the Netflix adaptation that he didn't understand, but added, “We are working on different mediums. We need to give that space.''
The actor stated that the show is a “different medium than games,” and that games themselves are a different medium than books, comics, and other Witcher-related media. Cockle said the show “needs to have room to exist on its own.”
That said, the Geralt actor said he would like to speak with Netflix's writers to get more clarity on the show's decisions.
“I don't know why they made the choices they did. I'd like to talk to some of the writers and understand intellectually why they made the choices they did.” he said, before comparing it to HBO's The Witcher. Adaptation of The Last of Us.
“When you look at something like 'The Last of Us'… [the show] It follows the game's story fairly closely, with some minor changes. And it worked great and fans of the game loved it, so that's all well and good. ''Cockle said, “The Witcher series on Netflix not only has books, but they also have games, and they've reinterpreted the books a little bit, right, and they've also had comic books, which are again geared towards media.'' has been reinterpreted a bit…so you have to give [the show] There is room to grow and become who you want to be. ”
Cockle said he enjoyed the first season of Netflix's The Witcher series, but that subsequent seasons “started to go off the rails.” [he] I didn't fully understand it. ”
“I didn't lose interest…but I started thinking, 'I need to reframe the way I think about this show,' because it wasn't doing what I expected it to do. I don't like it and maybe I should…I should look at it and judge it on its own merits and leave the games and books to the side. ” He acknowledged that this may be difficult at times, especially for those who love rich worlds like The Witcher.
Netflix's original The Witcher has received mixed reviews among fans, but regardless, the fourth installment in the series is currently in production. Liam Hemsworth's Geralt of Rivia will make his first appearance after Superman star Henry Cavill (pictured above) announced he would end his role as the series' monster hunter in 2022.
In addition to Hemsworth, The Matrix star Laurence Fishburne will also join the cast of The Witcher Season 4 as Regis. Meanwhile, Danny Woodburn has been announced as Geralt's dwarf friend Zoltan Chivai.
As for Cockle, he will be reprising his role as Geralt in Netflix's upcoming Witcher anime, Sirens of the Deep.
