One TikTok star wasn't looking for a job in showbiz, but that's the reality.
Nine days ago, Megan Boni, a creator who goes by the username Girl On Couch on social media platforms, was an ordinary 26-year-old working a day job in sales and making funny videos on the side.
Then her satirical song “Looking for a Man in Finance” went viral. Now it's been endlessly remixed and spread around the world, and Boni says her life has been completely turned upside down.
“I haven't been able to sleep. I've felt like my mind went blank for a week,” she tells PEOPLE. “Suddenly, an agent came.”
Boni, who attended Penn State University and moved to New York City after graduating in 2019, added, “I'm in the process of hiring a manager. I quit my job!” (She says the company was cool about it. “They were like, 'Okay! You'll take care of it,'” she says.)
But Boni points out that it was all surreal.
“I'm on the phone with major companies. There are a lot of DJs who want to release their first single with me, so all of a sudden I'm navigating the music industry,” she explains.
Boni also said that the song is already in heavy rotation at concerts and clubs.
“People ask me if I'm annoyed that I'm not credited, but I don't think so. I literally asked the DJ to remix it!” she says.
Still, Boni added that she is looking forward to the release of the official single in order to earn royalties.
According to the TikToker, the idea for the song came from making fun of girls who complain about being single but also list a long list of expectations for potential partners.
“It was just making fun of it, so I started thinking about the weirdest and most elusive things in men, wrote them down, and I came up with that rhyme.” , 6'5 tall, looking for blue eyes.
Not only are there a lot of people adding beats to their lyrics, but the next trend is to add your own twist to the lyrics.
Music producer FINNEAS posted, “Looking for a WiFi network. Friend's house. Hotel. Airport.''
As for the future, Boni said the song will be released as a single and that she hopes to perform at shows and festivals. She also wants to try her hand at comedy.
“I'd like to take some stand-up or improv classes, maybe some acting classes, and I'll probably end up on YouTube,” she explains.
The rising star added that his family and friends can't believe what's happening.
“I have two brothers who probably hate me now because everyone keeps asking me about it. But my parents are overjoyed,” she says.
Boni added, “I always hope my content gets views, but I never expected this to resonate. It's become a monster. The internet is crazy.” I added.
