The year 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of Hellboy, one of the most popular and well-known properties outside of Marvel or DC Comics. That's right, the Dark Horse Comics staple has been around for 30 years and has appeared in some truly amazing print stories along the way. Of course, given his status as an icon, it's no wonder that Anung Un Rama has transcended the comic book medium multiple times.
Since his first TV show in 1994, Seeds of DestructionHellboy has explored many mediums over the years. He's been featured on a ton of merchandise, including t-shirts, action figures, and posters. He's also appeared in three movies, starring Ron Perlman and David Harbour. Hellboy has even branched out into animation. Not to mention, he's solved paranormal cases in the world of video games.
It's no exaggeration to say that Hellboy's appearance in the game had both good and bad points. Injustice 2 and Brawlhalla was entertaining, but his dedicated title wasn't so much. Here we rank them all from worst to relatively good.
5. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army – Terror of the Tooth Fairy
Following the success of Boy from Hell In 2004, directed by Guillermo del Toro Hellboy 2: The Golden Army It was released in 2008, and while it ultimately doesn't live up to the standards of its predecessor, the cast, art, and story are all pretty good – but the same can't be said for Tuesday Creatives' shoddy production of the mobile game tie-in. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army – Terror of the Tooth Fairy.
Released in December 2008 Tooth fairy horror The game was available for free on the Apple App Store, and it's easy to see why: the terrifying Tooth Fairies from the film fly at you and you have to tap to “shoot” them. Shake the screen to reload, then go back to defending yourself again. Survive as long as you can to get the highest score possible.
There's nothing more to say than that. Tooth fairy horror It's basic, boring and a total skippable film even for the most dedicated Hellboy fan.
4. Hellboy: By Night Dogs/Hellboy: Asylum Seeker
Hellboy: Night Dog It was developed for PC in 2000 and made its way to PlayStation in 2003 with a new title. Hellboy: Asylum SeekerThis is the first video game to feature Hellboy in the lead role, and the fact that some effort was made to translate the original material into a video game is what Cryo Studios' efforts with these two titles are all about.
Asylum seekers/Night Dog Players take control of Hellboy (David Guzman), who investigates the disappearance of a fellow member of the Bureau of Paranormal Investigation and Defense. He uses his fists (usually regular ones, not giant stone ones) and a revolver to fight off enemies, slowly roaming different environments as he tries to figure out what happened to his friend.
Overall, the game is slow, Hellboy's tank-controlled combat feels hollow at best, and the graphics are terrible for the time. Boy from Hell While the design and storyline are similar to the comics, the execution is a huge fail.
3. Hellboy: Demon Stink
Returning to the world of mobile gaming, we come across another game that is built to raise expectations. Hellboy 2: The Golden Armyand ties into another Hellboy game that's being mentioned soon, this time from G5 Entertainment. Hellboy: The Stench of Evilwas released on July 10th, 2008, and takes the title character into the exciting world of action-platforming. The problem is, this game isn't very exciting.
The stench of stench is a very simple platform game. Hellboy runs and jumps through several different environments, mowing down enemies with ease. Taking enough damage to fill up your rage meter makes your attacks deal more damage. For a mobile game, the visuals are decent, with the environments being fairly detailed and colorful.
generally, Hellboy: The Stench of Evil It's not terrible, but it's also not particularly good, just a half-baked promotional game.
2. Hellboy: The Science of the Devil
After being absent from the console scene for some time, Hellboy and friends made a spectacular return in 2008. Hellboy: The Science of Evil Del Toro is Boy from Hell Universe is coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PSP, with Perlman returning as Big Red, Selma Blair as Liz Sherman and Doug Jones as Abe Sapien – all three playable characters! They band together to defeat the evil Hermann von Klempt (Jurgen Prochnow) and his forces.
Compared to the previous three games, The science of evil It's a big step forward, but it's still not great. The design, voice acting, combat, and story don't quite make up for the somewhat lackluster graphics and boring gameplay. With a bit more polish and development, it could be great. The science of evil It was meant to be the Hellboy adventure gamers had been waiting for for years.
Additionally, Lobster Johnson, voiced by the legendary Bruce Campbell, was planned to be released as DLC, but that content was reportedly scrapped after all. The science of evil They came so close to greatness but ultimately missed the mark.
1. Hellboy: Web of the Weird
Hellboy returns to the gaming forefront in 2023, over a decade after his dedicated game was released. Hellboy: Web of the WeirdIt's not based on the film series, nor is it made to promote anything else. It tells the Hellboy story in a way that Boy from Hell comics with Dark Horse and Mignola directly involved, but does it all come together?
Weird's Web is arguably the most beautiful Hellboy-centric game to date, and feels like the comics have come to life. The late Lance Reddick plays a fantastic Hellboy, searching for missing BPRD agents in a dimension known as the Wyld. Unfortunately, the combat in this roguelike (not to be confused with roguelite) title leaves a lot to be desired, and much of the gameplay feels boring and repetitive.
Even after 30 years, it seems Hellboy has still yet to receive a truly definitive video game adaptation, and hopefully, one will come along within the next 30 years.
