Food and travel are closely related. Personally, I travel to eat. I love nothing more than going to new places and trying unique flavors and cuisines. But, of course, not every meal is going to be great. So redditor u/BornThought4074 asked, “In which countries was the food better than expected? And in which countries was the food worse than expected?” People said:
.“The Turkish food, especially the Turkish breakfast, was amazing. Always lots of fresh bread, pastries, cheese, cold cuts, fruit, olives, hummus, and the best fresh honeycomb I've ever tasted. It was a large feast with small plates.”
.“Amalfi, Italy. When we went to the Amalfi Coast, we expected the food to be ok considering the area is a tourist destination. We were actually surprised. What we ate Everything was so fresh and consistently delicious.”
.“Food in Switzerland was not good at all. We did research before every meal to find the best place. Still, all the food we ate was so-so at best. But the view… will not disappoint!”
Four.“Unfortunately, Cambodia is on my list of food dislikes. I was expecting bright, fresh flavors like Vietnamese food, but most of the food was bland.”
Five.“Sri Lanka! The food amazed me. I never had a bad meal during my travels. It's been six years since I visited this country, and even after all these years, I dream about some of them. The curry was very flavorful.'' ”
.“Icelandic food was better than I expected. We ate lots of delicious food, from fish stew and hot dogs to lamb chops, fresh rye bread, and skyr.”
.“Indonesia has delicious food. Indonesian food is not known where I'm from and it's hard to find Indonesian restaurants. The food was a pleasant surprise.”
.“Puerto Rico. It's a tropical island, but ironically, it was hard to find fresh fish. We ate a lot of pork and fried food. I love visiting Puerto Rico. I've been there several times. I’ve been there and it’s been a good trip, but my food game is off.”
.“The Dutch food was below average. I like Dutch snacks and desserts like stroopwafels, poffertjes, and frikanders, but otherwise Dutch food is one of my least favorite dishes. My favorite thing to eat whenever I go to Holland is Indonesian food.”
Ten.“Bologna, Italy. This is the place to go for unexpectedly delicious food. It should be the true culinary capital of Italy. Think tagliatelle al ragu, tortellini, lasagna and more.”
.“It would be really unfair if Colombia had the best food in the world. We have beautiful people, we have a great and diverse country. If Colombia had as good food as Mexico, it would be really unfair. If we did, we'd have to break it up in an antitrust lawsuit.'' That being said, I didn't think the food was terrible, just very mediocre. ”
.“Georgia had great food. Everything from khachapuri to wine was amazing. I went in not knowing much about food, but after taking a cooking class with a local family and eating my way around the country. , I was so impressed that I went home and started cooking Georgian food.”
.“Lima, Peru has some of the best food. The city is full of great restaurants, from some of the world's most acclaimed restaurants to smaller, more casual eateries. It also has some particularly great Chinese and Japanese food. ”
.“Poland. I thought the food would be more similar to German food (I like German food, but it's often repetitive and unimaginative), but I was very pleasantly surprised by Polish food.”
.“The food in Dubai was better than I expected. Dubai has a lot of detractors, but you can get away from the shopping malls and fancy restaurants and go to places where local working-class people and immigrants live and eat. If you go, you'll find great food. It's hard to find another city with such diverse, unique and authentic options.”
.“Ireland's food scene surprised me. Americans tend to think of Irish food as meat and potatoes, but I had some great Irish food that went far beyond the typical dishes. And… We also had some bomb international food.”
.“I was a little disappointed with the food in Morocco. The tagine and couscous were good, but every restaurant had only those two options and I got bored.”
.“Belgium was an amazing gem for me. I had very low expectations for this trip. I went for a beer, but ended up loving the homely, flavorful, comforting food.”
.And finally, “To be honest, my partner and I were a little disappointed with the food in France. We tried a wide variety of things, from street food to some fine-dining restaurants, but overall… It was pretty good…well, we hadn't even been in Italy for a week, so maybe that had something to do with our disappointment.”
