san antonio – Two college football teams and rivals in the San Antonio area are both ranked in the inaugural CBS Sports Group of Five Power Rankings for the 2024 season.
According to the report, the American Athletic Conference's University of Texas at San Antonio Roadrunners and the Sun Belt Conference's Texas State Bobcats came in at No. 6 and No. 12, respectively, in the power rankings.
“(UTSA football head coach Jeff) Traylor's program is about more than just one player, and this schedule is set up well. UTSA will miss Tulane and South Florida and will be home to Memphis.” the article states.
The power rankings also have good things to say about the Bobcats, indicating they could be in for another strong season.
“GJ Kinne did an incredible job leading Texas State to its first-ever bowl game in his first season. Don't be surprised if the Bobcats take another step forward and contend for a Sun Belt title. Please,” CBS Sports reported.
The Roadrunners defeated Marshall, 9-4, in the Scooter's Coffee Frisco Bowl, capping off strong 2023 seasons for both teams. The Bobcats had perhaps their best year ever, finishing 8-5 and defeating Rice in the ServPro First Responder Bowl.
Last year, UTSA defeated Texas State 20-13 on Sept. 9 at the Alamodome. The Roadrunners had never lost to the Bobcats in football history (5-0), so this win further increased their lead in the series. The teams will meet again on Sept. 7 in San Marcos and will play non-conference games for the next eight seasons.
However, UTSA will have a new starting quarterback under center for the first time in seven years, and will have a new look on offense. Frank Harris, who set multiple school records, finally exhausted his eligibility. The team returns 51 lettermen, including 16 starters.
Texas State made a splash this offseason by acquiring former James Madison star quarterback Jordan McCloud in the transfer portal, and also returns a team that includes 17 starters from a year ago. Their rookie class ranks among the best in the Sun Belt Conference, according to 247Sports.
The top teams in the first power rankings include No. 1 Boise State, No. 2 Liberty State and No. 3 Memphis. Boise State won the 2023 Mountain West title after a late-season coaching change that saw the return of Liberty State's Kaidon Salter. Quarterback Seth Hennigan is entering his fourth season in Memphis after winning the C-USA Most Valuable Player Award in 2023 and leading the Tigers to a 10-3 record.
