Do not travel to Haiti.
The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4 travel advisory for all U.S. residents, ordering them to “do not travel” to the Caribbean country of Haiti.
Haiti, one of the Western Hemisphere's poorest countries, has seen increasing reports of kidnappings, crimes and deadly gang violence, and authorities are now warning citizens to stay away.
“Do not travel to Haiti due to kidnappings, crime, civil unrest, and poor medical infrastructure,” U.S. officials warn.
The U.S. State Department warns Americans:
Kidnappers may use sophisticated planning or take advantage of unplanned opportunities, and convoys may be attacked. Kidnappings often involve ransom negotiations, and victims, who are U.S. citizens, are physically harmed during the kidnapping. The victims' families paid thousands of dollars to rescue their loved ones.
NY Post reports It has been revealed that the nonprofit Project Dynamo is working to rescue at least 40 Americans. Meanwhile, the State Department says it is aware of at least several hundred more American citizens still stranded in Haiti.
The situation there has become so dangerous that Haiti's Prime Minister Ariel Henry officially resigns after weeks of chaos and deadly gang violence. Henry was reportedly ousted after leaders of Haiti's most dangerous gangs staged an armed rebellion.
