The Connecticut Sun improved their unbeaten record to 7-0 since the start of the 2024 WNBA season with a tough 74-72 win over the Dallas Wings on Friday night. Connecticut remains the league's only unbeaten team.
But with 9.6 seconds left, the Sun nearly suffered their first defeat on an incredible play by guard Sevgi Uzun: After inbounding the ball from under the Connecticut basket, Uzun bounced it off Breonna Jones' back, then picked it up after it hit Jones and took a shot from inside the free throw line.
Had Uzun's shot gone in, it might have sealed the victory for Dallas. Instead, the ball bounced off the back of the rim. Maddie Siegrist couldn't grab the offensive rebound, and Connecticut's Tayshia Harris got to it. She was fouled and made one of two free throws to give the Sun the final points of the win and a 5-0 start at home.
Connecticut's 7-0 start extended the best start in franchise history, but the Suns still have a long way to go before approaching the best finish in WNBA history. The Minnesota Lynx started the 2016 season 13-0 and finished 28-6 before losing in five games to the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA Finals.
For comparison, the Sparks started the 2001 and 2003 seasons 9-0, so Connecticut is tying for the fourth-best start in league history.
The Suns started the game sluggishly, giving Dallas a 7-0 lead. The Wings led by 11 at one point, but a 3-pointer from Tiffany Mitchell put Connecticut back on top. The Suns led 40-34 by halftime and 59-50 at the start of the fourth quarter, but Dallas quickly went on an 8-0 run to close the gap and fight until the end.
Jones led the Sun with 22 points on 10-of-14 shooting. Alyssa Thomas had 15 points, nine rebounds and 14 assists and DeWanna Bonner had 12 points. Arike Ogunbowale had 21 rebounds and seven assists for Dallas. Siegrist scored 17 points on 8-of-8 shooting from the field.
Connecticut's next matchup is on the road against the Atlanta Dream on Sunday at 3pm ET.
