Australian cybersecurity consultancy Sekuro has announced the appointment of Scott Waters to the newly created role of Security Advisor to the Federal Government. Waters has more than 25 years of experience in cybersecurity leadership, security operations management, consulting, and auditing across a variety of federal agencies and programs. The appointment is part of Sekulo's strategic drive to address the growing cyber threat to the public sector, with a particular focus on Australia's critical infrastructure.
In previous roles, Waters served as chief security officer (CSO) for two significant federal outsourced ICT programs managed by Ledios and Hewlett-Packard. His role at Ledios, overseeing the largest outsourcing environment at the time, particularly benefited him from his experience. His extensive experience in CSO/CISO roles and security leadership gives him a comprehensive perspective on the multifaceted aspects of security organizations.
The appointment comes amid increasing cyber threats targeting Australian government departments, agencies and third parties. According to the BlackBerry Global Threat Intelligence Report, cyberattacks against public services increased from 30,000 in March to May 2023 to 48,000 in June to August 2023. These alarming statistics highlight the urgency of strengthening cyber resiliency within federal agencies.
Waters' role will primarily include spearheading efforts to strengthen security resiliency within federal agencies. He will focus on protecting Australia's critical infrastructure, a strategic priority given the escalating cyber threats targeting the public sector.
Sekuro’s recent success in securing important projects within the public sector reflects the specialist demand for specialist cybersecurity services. Mr. Waters' appointment is expected to further strengthen Sekulo's capabilities in managing and mitigating cyber risks associated with federal operations.
In addition to his extensive professional experience, Mr. Waters has contributed to the cybersecurity community through 10 years of service, including his tenure as Chair of the ISACA Canberra Chapter Board. He also served on his ISACA International Subcommittee.
