The origins of what we're talking about here security breach Transformative events can be traced back any number of times, but the reality is that they all contribute as separate elements to the unique mosaic that is the legacy of industrial cybersecurity. Most interestingly, the first hacks into industrial control systems occurred in water treatment facilities, oil and gas pipelines, and energy plants.
These targets were chosen because they simultaneously offer greater visibility, increased social impact, and most notably, easily exploitable vulnerabilities. In most cases, these attacks allow the hacker to achieve all of his initial economic and self-promotional goals, while at the same time eliminating the long-term benefit that we are all currently working on, namely the investigation of his ICS. I have also found a way to make it successful.
John Cusimano, VP of OT Security at Armexa, is our guest on this episode. He has seen firsthand hackers apply the lessons learned about industrial control systems and has some interesting thoughts on the current threat landscape and solutions for keeping systems secure. Watch/listen to the discussion:
- How he transitioned from a safety and automation engineer to a career in OT cybersecurity.
- The benefits of failing in a safe manner.
- New dangers of remote monitoring.
- How to implement a safe list for your applications.
- Always be prepared to answer the “What if?” questions. question.
- Microsegmentation and DMZ strategy.
- Best practices for patching and avoiding alarm floods.
- Why is his biggest concern about a large-scale coordinated attack on the ICS?
