The US State Department is warning Americans to reconsider traveling to Mexico's Baja California state, where four bodies were recently discovered.
This warning is part of a travel advisory for the country that has been in effect since late August 2023. “Violent crimes such as murder, kidnapping, car theft, and robbery are widespread and common in Mexico,” according to the department's website.
It also added that U.S. government officials are restricted or prohibited from visiting certain areas of Mexico, making it difficult to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens who need them.
But they shared tips for Americans who travel to the area against warnings.
- Let your friends and family know about your travel plans.
- If you leave the group, share your GPS location with a friend.
- If you take a taxi alone, take a photo of the taxi number or license plate and send it to a friend.
- Use toll roads whenever possible and avoid driving alone or at night.
- Be especially careful when visiting local bars, nightclubs, and casinos.
- Do not show signs of wealth (such as jewelry).
- Be careful around banks and ATMs.
The ministry also suggests enrolling in the Smart Traveler Registration Program.
