There's a lot of enthusiasm for this week's RSA conference, but there's also a lot of concern.
This is because the attack surface area is expanding, and some believe that a “digital tsunami” may be occurring.
“We all see a positive side of this situation. How we use AI, how we leverage generative AI, how we do all these amazing things we know are possible. “We're trying to come up with something,” he said. Shelley Kramer (pictured, left), managing director and principal analyst at theCUBE Research. “And on the other side of the equation are the threat actors, the bad guys, who are rapidly learning how to use and leverage these tools.”
Kramer was joined by theCUBE Research principal analyst David Linthicum (right) during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media's live streaming studio, at the RSA conference. They discussed the evolving landscape of cybersecurity and the critical need for innovative approaches to address emerging threats and talent shortages. (*Disclosure below.)
Cybersecurity talent shortage is an urgent issue
A big topic at this week's conference is the talent shortage. Linthicome said conversations at the conference showed that talent shortages are the main risk facing companies.
“People don't want to hear that because it sounds like a boring answer to a risk question, but the reality is that mistakes are made due to misconfigurations, which lead to lack of staffing and lack of training. “There's a potential connection,” he says. “We just don't have the right people in the roles to configure security correctly. We've achieved security that works for a long time if used properly.”
But right now, we don't have enough security architects, security engineers, or enough advanced talent around to keep us safe. Currently, Linthicum noted, he appears to have 10 openings going after one qualified candidate.
“That's scary because it means they can't find the talent they need. They're actively training in-house,” Linthicum said. “But we're going to have to strengthen our education systems. We're going to have to strengthen our personal training systems. We're going to have to strengthen how we train people on demand to get the skills we need to make that happen.” need to do it.”
