Development studio based in Mexico wabi sabi game and gearbox publishing announced it RKGK (Rakugaki) is an anime-inspired title that fuses Japanese and Mexican culture through graffiti, and is coming to PC. vapor upon May 22, 2024.
In our chat with the studio, we learned more about the thinking behind the development of this single-player 3D action platformer video game.
How did RKGK come about?
This game is the studio's first title of 2020. Riot Games' Underrated Founders Program. The fund aims to empower underrepresented communities to create games and experiences for gamers of all backgrounds. Meanwhile, Gearbox Publishing has partnered with Wabisabi Games to ensure the studio's vision reaches the widest possible audience around the world.
What caught our attention is that the development team is made up of just 29 Mexicans and Latin Americans. We also used a graffiti artist for the art, and the graphics engine we used was his Unreal Engine 4.
What is RKG?
The citizens of Cap City are mind-controlled by the B Corporation, an oppressive corporation run by an evil CEO, Mr. Buff. Here, the brave graffiti artist Vala and his friends fight to restore the world to its true beauty.
How is RKGK played?
It's a platform game that uses the city as a canvas in the style of Jet Set Radio, but with exploration elements that explore almost every corner of the game.
Part of the appeal of this game is that you have to chain jumps, runs, slides, and moves to find the fastest route. Using the spray while moving allows you to perform a kind of dash and also eliminate enemies.
Of course, there will be bosses that will test our control skills, but the best thing is that there are game modes that are a little more forgiving, or for those “old school” who want a little more involvement. Challenge.
Among the additions that caught our attention are the presence of several graffiti options, a wide color palette, and a variety of costumes inspired by cosplay.
For speedrun enthusiasts, there are special timers, hidden paths and secret treasures, and when you collect them you get more objects in a kind of hub that you can use to buy and equip all additional items. You will have the opportunity to.
No doubt, this title will be talked about a lot. Because while it's a lot of fun, it plays perfectly on Steam Deck OLED. In fact, I was able to run the demo at an average of 60 FPS using AMD FSR 2.2 image scaling. Although in quality mode, all presets are used in epic.
