Morrisville, North Carolina — Raleigh-Durham International Airport set a single-day passenger traffic record Monday, driven largely by Mother's Day travel and college graduation travel.
According to RDU, the airport set a single-day record on Monday, May 13, during Mother's Day and Graduation weekend, known as one of the busiest weekends of the year.
According to RDU officials, approximately 59,000 passengers passed through Terminals 1 and 2, 6.1% higher than the previous record set in October 2023.
According to RDU, Sunday was the busiest day on record at Terminal 1.
Earlier this year, RDU announced that Lufthansa will begin service to Frankfurt, Germany on June 6th, Copa Airlines will begin service to Panama City on June 21st, and Aeromexico will begin service to Mexico on July 1st. It was reported that the airline will begin service to the city.
RDU said about 1.3 million travelers used the airport in April, a 3.7% increase compared to March, which was boosted by spring break travel, and a 7.7% increase compared to April 2023.
“May traditionally marks the beginning of the summer travel season, beginning with Mother's Day and college graduation ceremonies and continuing through Memorial Day weekend,” said Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority President and CEO. (CEO) Michael Landgas said. “We expect demand for air travel to continue to increase in June and July as airlines expand their schedules and RDU welcomes three new international destinations.”
