BLACKSBURG, Va. — A demonstrator was arrested after a pro-Palestinian protest on the Virginia Tech campus on Sunday.
According to Virginia Tech's official news site, protesters began gathering on the lawn of the Graduate Life Center on Friday morning, when university officials told the protesters that the gathering was The university said it was in violation of University Policy 5000 regarding the use of facilities and events.
The university said dialogue between university officials, Vermont State Police and protest organizers “allowed us to maintain a safe and peaceful environment throughout much of the weekend.”
Officials said protesters on Sunday did not follow the policy and also occupied outdoor space next to the Graduate Life Center and Squires Student Center.
At that point, the university deemed the situation potentially dangerous and instructed demonstrators to remove their belongings and disperse. Those who did not disperse were approached by Vermont State Police and again asked to leave or be charged with trespassing.
At 10:15 p.m., police approached the protesters and asked them to disperse within five minutes. Those who did not leave were arrested. The university did not disclose the number of arrests.
The university issued a warning to people to avoid the area around 10:15 p.m.
Around 3:30 a.m. Monday, the university updated that the incident was “stabilized,” but police were still on scene. People were still asked to avoid the area.
