Summer has begun, and Michigan is truly the perfect place for summer. Specifically, one spot in Michigan has been named as the best place for summer. America's best summer destinations.
Mackinac Island is officially the tourism champion for the second year in a row. Michigan's legendary island has been named “America's Best Summer Destination” and is making waves.
Mackinac Island has been named the best place to enjoy a summer vacation this year in the popular USA Today Readers' Choice Travel Awards contest. The historic Michigan destination beat out popular spots in Wyoming, Alabama and Florida on this year's annual “Readers' Choice Top 10” travel list.
“Mackinac Island isn't uncommon to appear on these 'best of' lists, but given the multitude of summer destinations across the country, it's quite surprising that it topped this one. Of its number one ranking, USA Today said:
“Nestled between Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas is Mackinac Island, where you can take a horse-drawn carriage ride along car-free roads, see (and sample) fudge being made, and tour historic Fort Mackinac. This continental island in Lake Huron is also home to Mackinac Island State Park, where you can hike, bike, kayak, and photograph the local natural beauty, including the stunning limestone arch rocks.”
Of course, the historic Grand Hotel is a highlight for anyone visiting the island, whether they're a guest at the iconic inn or not. For many, the hotel and island are a summer tradition, and it's not just for Michiganders. In a recent interview with David Jurkac, president of the Grand Hotel, he said that generations of families have made summering at the Grand a part of their lives, and that it's like seeing old friends and making new ones every summer.
