“Kingdom Come: Deliverance (KCD) has sold more than 6 million copies to date. This is a real success for a game studio from the Czech Republic. We believe wholeheartedly in our product. However, we never expected it to become such a huge success. Six years after its release, records are still being broken and people still love it. This is an evergreen and great thing for our team, our studio, and perhaps the Czech gaming industry.”
For our listeners who don't know much about games, can you tell us a little bit about them?
“KCD is a role-playing game. You play the role of Henry, a blacksmith's son caught up in a civil war. What's interesting about KCD is that it is based on history and real events that took place in medieval Bohemia in 1403. The story we tell is based on historical events, so players will travel back in time to medieval Bohemia to see how history happened.
“To ensure we are historically accurate, we have in-house historians and also work closely with universities and other people who have taught us about medieval life. I strongly believe that if you want to see what the Middle Ages were like, KCD is the closest place.”
I think you touched on it briefly, but could you tell us a little more about how this game did internationally? Why was this important to the Czech gaming industry?
“KCD has certainly crossed borders. During the development of the game, we had in mind to make it an international product and target a wider audience. The largest game market is the United States , Germany, and Japan. Numerically, it sold the most in the United States, but percentage-wise it was strongest in Germany. The reason for this is probably because the game is set in Bohemia. Because everything we present is more common for German gamers.
“Funny, but we have actually contributed to the increase in tourism in the area where KCD is held. KCD is held south of Prague and many German, French and British tourists visit I traveled to the countryside of the Czech Republic for the location where the match will be held.
The second edition of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is on sale now, right?
“The KCD sequel was announced on April 18th, six years after the release of the first game. Our studio of 250 people has the ability to work on one project before moving on to the next. We had to work on fixing several aspects of KCD released in 2018 (downloadable content, bug fixes, quality assurance). The team made a big announcement about the sequel in 2019, with the developer releasing a 14-minute trailer explaining what's to come. A concert was also held in Kutná Hora.
“When you knock on wood, people like wood, which is a really good sign. It's getting a little bit of a buzz right now because people have been really waiting for this game, so we're really happy about this.” ”
