A busy weekend for various California sports teams:
Bears finish second in Pac-12 men's golf
Cal finished runner-up at the Pac-12 Men's Golf Championship at Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree, Ariz., with three players in the top 13.
In the individual competition, Ethan Huang tied for 3rd place, Sampson Zheng placed 6th, and Eric Lee placed 13th. Fang's finish was the best by a California golfer since Collin Morikawa won in 2019.
The Bears, ranked 21st, had their best finish since 2016. Entering the final round, they trailed eventual champion Arizona State by just three strokes, but the third-place Sun Devils pulled away with a score of 352 on Sunday.
Cal, who had strung together four rounds between 360 and 370, checked in at 365 on Sunday.
The Bears will find out Wednesday whether they will earn their expected second straight bid to the NCAA regional tournament, which will be held May 13-15 at various venues.
California women's water polo takes second place at MPSF
The third-seeded California women's water polo team advanced to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship game for the first time since 2011, but lost 13-10 to undefeated No. 1 ranked UCLA in Bloomington, Indiana.
Roseanne Fallbert scored three goals for her third hat trick of the season, and Mary Dempsey scored two goals a day after scoring her 100th career goal. Dempsey has a team-leading 42 goals for the Bears (17-6).
The Bears will host the NCAA Championships for the first time May 10-12 at the Speaker Aquatics Complex. This field will be open to the public on Monday at 5pm during the selection program.
Cal qualifies for NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship
The Bears (28-9) earned a program-best No. 7 seed and will make the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year. California will play No. 10 Long Beach State (21-13) in Gulf Shores, Alabama, on Friday at noon PT.
California State earned its first win in the tournament last season, defeating Long Beach 3-2 in the NCAA first round.
A record six Pac-12 teams qualified for the 17-school NCAA field. Top-seeded USC is its third consecutive national champion.
