When the 2024 college football season begins, the playoff system will change from four teams to 12 teams, allowing more schools to play meaningful football in late October and into November. There are high hopes for Virginia Tech, which finished the 2023 season strong with a win over Tulane in the Military Bowl.
Another reason for Blacksburg's optimism is the retention head coach Brent Pry has received from key players and key additions in the transfer portal. Some teams could make a Cinderella run to the CFP next season, and one national college football writer thinks the Hokies could be one of them.
“You have to squint to see Virginia Tech's path next season, but it's there.
The Hokies quietly took a step forward last year, finishing 7-6 after a disastrous 1-3 start. Much of that growth has been on offense, with Virginia Tech taking note of Kyron Drones, who has emerged as one of the top running quarterbacks in all CFB (818 yards, 5 TDs).
An improved offense and a top-25 defense have legitimately energized the Brent Pry era heading into 2024.
The reason I'm bullish on 2024 is because almost everyone on the team will be back. Virginia Tech has returned his 86% production, leading the FBS. This is a huge amount of experience and gives the Hokies a chance to do well against a generally friendly ACC schedule. ”

Hammer also said that if the Drones take the next step and the offensive line in front of them plays well, the Hokies will be a team to watch. He's right about one thing. That means Virginia Tech has a friendly ACC schedule, with the exception of North Carolina, Louisville and Florida State. Clemson will be home and Miami will be South Florida. Syracuse might be a tough road game in November.
If the Hokies can stay healthy, a playoff berth in 2024 is not out of the question, and while people outside of Blacksburg will see that as a Cinderella run, it's not surprising within the Hokies.
