North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson plans to “transform” state government if elected in November, and he laid out his plans in a wide-ranging speech this weekend.
The Republican lieutenant governor, speaking at the Republican National Convention in Greensboro, North Carolina, focused on education, blasting school officials who “think they know more than you, know your kids better than you do, and are willing to feed them a constant diet of communism and pornography,” according to state media outlet WRAL. He also made it clear he believes North Carolina's economy is poised to “explode.”
“North Carolina is literally on the verge of exploding economically,” Robinson said. “It's time for us to steer that explosion in the right direction and make this state even better than it is now.”
Robinson has run on similar themes to the national Republican leader, focusing on parental rights, the economy and environmental regulation, as he seeks to win the November election, but he also outlined how he plans to appoint people who will have “influence” in running state government.
“… That's what we're going to bring to the governorship,” he said. “We're going to make a difference.”
Robinson and Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein are running to replace Gov. Roy Cooper (D-N.C.), who is term-limited and cannot run for reelection. The election is expected to be close, as Democrats work hard to elect Joe Biden President and tilt North Carolina toward the Democrats, as is the state's presidential race.
Former President Donald Trump has supported Robinson, calling him “Martin Luther King Jr. on steroids” in March. In his speech on Saturday, Robinson defended Trump against what he sees as the media focusing on the challenges he faces rather than “the failure of the Democratic Party.”

At the convention on Friday, Trump's son Eric Trump and daughter-in-law Lara Trump, co-chair of the Republican National Committee, gave speeches celebrating change across the Republican Party.
During his term as lieutenant governor, Robinson has courted controversy for making derogatory remarks about the LGBT community, using anti-Semitic slurs and making comments that were perceived as misogynistic.
