NBC Sports is offering new audio instructions for shots, serves and volleys at this year's French Open Tennis Championships.
Noah Eagle is set to debut as the network's new play-by-play voice at Roland Garros this year, USA TODAY Sports reported. Mr. Eagle will work with veteran analysts Mary Carrillo and John McEnroe.
NBC plans to make an official announcement Wednesday afternoon.
Eagle, who just won the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Personality/Emerging On-Air Talent on Tuesday night, has been a host and play-by-play for Tennis Channel since 2019, and was hired by Roland Garros to host the network's on-air talent. A site match was called. 2020.
“As a child, I was a fan of the sport. My father hosted the French Open and the U.S. Open for many years. I was walking,” Eagle told USA TODAY Sports in an email.
“I loved how close I could be to the action there and the energy drew me in. I've always loved the way the sport lets you problem-solve in real time, so it's been great to finally be able to call it that over the last five years.”
It's another high-profile job for the 27-year-old Eagle. He was recently named lead play-by-play announcer for the USA men's and women's basketball teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics this summer.
Eagle, the son of veteran sportscaster Ian Eagle, says he knew he would have to deal with allegations of nepotism if he pursued a career in broadcasting, but the criticism was worth it if it allowed him to pursue a career path he truly loves.
“I knew what I was interested in and what I was signing up for,” Eagle told USA TODAY Sports in an interview last fall, “but for me, this is one of those things that brings me so much joy and I felt like if I continued to do this, especially, it was going to work out.”
Judging by the accolades Eagle has received (from his time in college and pro football at NBC to his recent Emmy win and new responsibilities), it's safe to say he made a wise decision.
NBC Sports' coverage of the French Open begins this Sunday at noon ET on Peacock, with NBC offering live coverage from Paris starting at 11 a.m. ET on Monday.
