The Mad Max video games developed by Avalanche have since become cult classics and have excited many gamers, and while a sequel is not likely, the next best thing is that the fan-favorite character will return in the upcoming film, Furiosa: The Mad Max Saga.
The following contains spoilers for Furiosa. Be warned!
Later in the film, Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) gets into a fighting mode after losing her arm and corners Dementus (Chris Hemsworth).
While searching for a ride at the Citadel, she spoke with a few people, one of whom led her to a car with a missing wheel. “Isn't this a beautiful car?” he said.
The voice and distinctive look may look familiar: As confirmed in the credits (via ComicBook.com), the character is Chumbucket, the hunchbacked mechanic who aids Max on his adventures in the 2015 video game.
Another character from the game, the villain Scrotus, also appears in Furiosa, meaning this Mad Max prequel will have a number of connections to its video game counterpart.
Despite this, Furiosa director George Miller was apparently not a fan of the Mad Max video games, suggesting that he chose Hideo Kojima to direct The Wasteland instead.
“[It] “It wasn't as good as we hoped it would be. It was out of our control,” Miller told GamingBible.
“I'm the kind of guy that I won't do something unless I'm doing it at the highest level,” Miller continued, “but I just spoke to Kojima-san, who came all the way from Japan. I don't know if he'll take it on, but he's got so much great stuff in his head that I wouldn't ask him to do it. But if someone like that takes it on, I can't.”
