Chiefs receiver Lachie Rice is facing eight felonies. That means he also faces multiple potential issues under the NFL's personal conduct policy.
“We continue to monitor developments in this matter,” NFL chief spokesman Brian McCarthy told PFT in an email.
The eight felonies (six counts of crash with bodily injury, one count of crash with serious injury, and one count of aggravated assault) do not include leaving the scene of an injury crash. Those may still come.
The league typically waits until the criminal case is resolved before imposing punishment. Because Rice faces a felony charge, he may be placed on paid administrative leave.
Leagues often don't use paid time off because there's nothing to take time off for in the offseason. The Chiefs could ask Rice to sit out the offseason program. In 2019, the Chiefs and receiver Tyreek Hill agreed to sit out offseason practice while officials investigated his son's broken arm. In the end, Hill was not charged.
The Chiefs could also release Rice, avoiding the potential requirement to pay him while he can't play. His 2024 salary of $1.045 million is fully guaranteed, but the Chiefs could void the guarantee based on the language in his contract.
The Chiefs had no comment on the matter as of Wednesday night.
