NEW YORK (PIX11) — One of New York City's top leaders laid out a decidedly different vision for the city Wednesday.
New York City Council President Adrian Adams is calling for more city jobs, expanded 3K education and more support for nonprofits.
The proposal was announced during the annual State of the Union Address at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
The speech was delivered with Mayor Eric Adams seated in the front center of the auditorium.
“Mayor, I am ready,” Speaker Adams said at the beginning of his prepared remarks. “I'm ready to lead by example. Look at this…”
She will strengthen the city's efforts to build affordable housing on state-owned land (3-K and Pre-K expansion), fund arts and libraries, and pay nonprofits more equitably. , proposed hiring more city workers to inspect buildings and provide mental health services. And rebuild crumbling streets.
The city currently has more than 3,000 job openings, up from about 20,000 before the mayor began cutting jobs late last year, according to the speaker's office.
“Did you know that cities have bigger budgets than most countries?'' Speaker Adams said at one point. “We have the resources to make all of this happen for everyone.”

Speakers also criticized the mayor's team for failing to efficiently and transparently deliver services such as processing food benefits and housing vouchers. He also noted the failure to develop a comprehensive plan for city streets.
Chairman Adams said the New York City Council would begin keeping score.
