The NBA announced in a statement Wednesday that it has permanently banned Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter from the league for violating gambling rules. According to an internal investigation conducted by the NBA, Porter bet on NBA games, divulged confidential information to other gamblers, and coordinated his participation in certain games to influence the outcome of certain bets.
The league began investigating Porter after a March 20 game against the Sacramento Kings in which he played just three minutes. Porter quit the match, saying he didn't feel well. Prior to the game, Porter spoke to “an individual known to be an NBA bettor” about his health, according to an NBA statement. He then placed an $80,000 parlay on the game, with another person betting that Porter would underperform. Sports betting operators and gambling market watchdog organizations brought the unusual bet to the NBA's attention, and the sportsbook froze $80,000 in bets that would have been paid out to $1.1 million.
After signing with the Raptors, Porter also bet on at least 13 NBA games using a co-worker's account, according to the investigation. None of them were games in which he played, but three of them involved a single game for the Raptors. The league claims Porter bet a total of $54,094 during that period, resulting in a payout of $76,059.
Porter had an active VIP FanDuel account before signing with the Raptors last December. action network report. Sources said Porter had millions of dollars in that account from 2021 to 2023 while playing for three different teams in the NBA G League. Those bets did not include NBA or college basketball games, one person said. action network.
In September 2020, Porter began posting about gambling, stock trading, and cryptocurrencies on his X account. @taytrades11, daily hive I will report. This account has been mostly dormant since 2023.
