March 12 (UPI) — When Sakchin Bessette first co-founded interactive entertainment studio Moment Factory in 2001, airports like Singapore's Changi Airport and Tokyo's Haneda were just starting to dabble in digital art.
Today, Moment Factory is leading the way, transforming travel hubs around the world into buzz-generating gateway destinations.

Since its founding in Montreal, the studio has grown to over 450 employees and satellite offices in Paris, New York, and more. During that time, Moment Factory has spearheaded projects ranging from Super Bowl halftime shows to tours with artists like Olivia Rodrigo and his 100 Gecs.
An innovator in the entertainment and travel sector, the studio's signature style can be seen around the world, transforming established locations such as Kaleidoscope Cave Lazy River in Tennessee and The Orchard at Hamad International Airport in Qatar .
In an interview with UPI, Bessette said the company's motto, “We do it in public,” sums up the company's signature style of blending interactive multimedia art with the real world. He said there was.
Moment Factory installations are often a major attraction for tourists and art enthusiasts, with interactive art at locations such as Changi Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Moynihan Station at New York City's Penn Station and Tokyo's Shinjuku Station. It reminds me.
In Shinjuku, the world's busiest train station, Moment Factory will partner with Sony Music to create a new flagship multimedia installation in the east-west corridor in 2022.
Dozens of Moment Factory staff used sound, light and video to install color buses that fill the space, which more than 3 million passengers pass through each day, with shades of blue, pink and purple.
Bessette said the company has seen significant growth over the past decade due to increased competition between cities for tourists and airlines and airports for customers.
“If passengers have a better experience at an airport, they are more likely to stopover at that airport rather than another,” he said.
“Many of our facilities are designed with the overall passenger experience in mind. Certain facilities enhance the passenger experience, sometimes distracting from lineups and security, and sometimes changing corridors and transition zones within the airport. We will strengthen it.”
The effort began in earnest in 2013 with a redesign of Los Angeles International Airport, Bessette said, but has since spread around the world and recently landed in Singapore.
In New Jersey, the company renovated Terminal A at Newark's Liberty International Airport in 2022, adding a large-scale digital mural featuring a rotating lineup of New Jersey highlights.
Guests will receive a combination of practical flight information, intuitive boarding cues and fun Jersey trivia as they head to the gate.
Bessette said the company sometimes runs “experiential theaters,” which are basically incredibly large LED screens combined with sound programming, to help passengers relax and be gently entertained while waiting in line. It's called making.
“We want to create a spa-like atmosphere without necessarily being distracting,” he said.
Other amenities, such as LAX's hallways, are more interactive, so the screens sync with departure times as passengers pass by and planes get ready to take off. In places like Changi, the studio uses weather data to provide visualizations, showing animations of raindrops if it's wet outside and animations of sunshine if it's warm.
Moment Factory's giant waterfall installation in Changi is designed more as a show than a single piece of art, making nature a spectacle. In Doha, Qatar, the company used similar technology to enhance shopping and food courts at the airport.
Bessette said Moment Factory applies unique approaches to in-airport entertainment, managing “pain points” and enhancing transitions, depending on the client and space. .
The company's success at LAX has led to new installations at locations such as the Las Vegas Sphere, programming music tours for the likes of Madonna and Billie Eilish, and concerts at venues such as Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal; All kinds of opportunities have arisen to renovate iconic travel destinations, he said. The iconic Les Invalides Dome in Paris with the AURA experience.
Currently, Moment Factory has multiple projects including a new installation at Seoul's Incheon International Airport, a UNICEF Heart Strings program launching in late March in Houston, and the Messi Experience, an interactive experience featuring soccer superstar Lionel. I have a team working on a project at the same time. Messi will start from Miami in April.
