Montgomery County, Tennessee – Applications for the 2024-2025 Montgomery County Mayor’s Emerging Leaders (MEL) Program will be accepted until May 20, 2024.
MEL is aimed at local high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are interested in learning about how local government works by attending and participating in various committee meetings. Meetings with students will begin as early as August 2024 and end in May 2025.
“I love involving my students in meetings. We encourage them to ask questions and they are often interested in the topics we cover. Students They also shared key points from their own perspectives that were helpful to us. This program is a way to engage them and gain a deeper understanding of what is happening at the local government level. ,” said Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden.
MEL provides high school students with a basic understanding of how various aspects of county government work. Students interested in this program are asked to select their first and second choice for the committee, and all students are encouraged to attend Budget Committee meetings. The committee's options include Airport Authority, Animal Care and Control, Emergency Medical Services, Parks and Recreation, Jail and Juvenile, School Liaison, Audit, Fire Protection, and her E-911.
