RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — March Madness is here and sports enthusiasts say mobile sports betting is the new way to take it all in.
North Carolina became the latest state to allow players to bet on their favorite teams and sporting events on March 11th. The North Carolina Lottery Commission announced eight legal operators, including DraftKings, FanDuel and ESPN Bet.
Following the first week, Stahl Carpenter, Deputy Executive Director for Gambling Compliance and Sports Betting, said the mobile sports betting launch was a success with great response.
“A large amount of bets were placed. We are still compiling all the information and expect to have more information soon,” Carpenter said at the Sports Wagering Commission's first meeting since its inception. Masu.”
The state expects to generate about $100 million a year in revenue by the fifth year of operation, and plans to use some of the proceeds to support programs to prevent gambling addiction.
The announcement comes after the N.C. Education Lottery legalized digital instant games in November that allow people to easily gamble from their cell phones or laptops.
“I think it's great that you can bet on sports and make money doing it. I think it's great,” said Adam Howard, a student at North Carolina State University.
Howard said the Wolfpack's recent win in the ACC Championship has some students excited about what's next. Furthermore, he added: “A lot of us are talking about it. I know some people have done it and made money doing it. A lot of us are talking about it, at least in our circles. Masu.”
Simon Dergim, also a student at North Carolina State University, said mobile sports betting will bring in more fans.
“You have to be over 21 to participate,” Durgim added. “The game is really interesting. Normally, if it's a 16 seed versus a 1 seed, the odds are that the 1 seed will win, so you probably aren't that interested in the game. But if you put money into it, you can watch it and watch it and are more likely to pay attention to what is happening.”
The North Carolina Lottery Commission continues to compile data and wagers made during the first official week, but is now soliciting public comment and feedback on a list of proposed and updated rules.
Public comments will be accepted until April 19th, and another public comment session will be held on Tuesday, April 9th.
