Millcreek Township supervisors will consider asking voters whether a government study committee should be established to consider other forms of government for the township.
Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to direct the town attorney to draft an ordinance to place the issue on the Nov. 5 general election ballot.
Supervisors said they plan to vote on the ordinance at their next meeting May 28. If approved, Mill Creek voters will have to answer the following questions:
“A government of seven members to examine the existing form of government in Millcreek Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, consider the advisability of adopting a selective form of government, and recommend the pros and cons of selective planned government.'' “Should we elect an investigative committee?” ”
Millcreek Township is governed by three elected supervisors who are paid township employees.
Former Millcreek Township Supervisor Sue Weber led the push for the government review committee. Weber said it's not because supervisors aren't doing a good job managing the town.
“Years ago we had a government commission of inquiry. We need a commission of inquiry because that was a long time ago and it's time to look at things again,” Weber said Tuesday. said.
“When you look at things at a deep level, you get good ideas from other areas,” Weber said. “Would you like to know why Mill Creek is the only large town (in population) with this form of government?”
Oversight Committee Chair Kim Kuria said she was concerned about the potential cost of the study. Mr. Clear had proposed studying costs and setting parameters for the study before voting on whether to put the question on the ballot.
Clear ultimately agreed with residents that the township could approve the ballot question and notify residents of the potential commission costs later, but before the November vote.
“I'm used to making decisions knowing the costs up front,” Clear says. “We all take our jobs seriously. But you're right. Money can come later.”
