On Sunday, May 26, boxing legend Mike Tyson underwent emergency medical treatment while flying from Miami to Los Angeles, after it was later confirmed that he had suffered a stomach ulcer that worsened and was causing him to vomit just 30 minutes before landing.
Tyson said in an interview with X earlier this week that he felt great and that “I don't need to be 100% fit to beat Jake Paul, but I am 100% fit right now,” hinting that the upcoming bout will not be affected. While that was the initial impression, Jake Paul and Most Valuable Promotions released a statement confirming the postponement of the bout. In an official statement posted on X, Paul's company, Most Valuable Promotions, released the following: “Mike and Jake are in agreement that it is fair for both fighters to have equal training time for this important bout so that they can compete at their highest level. The health and well-being of our fighters is our number one priority, and we fully support Mike in taking the time he needs to perform at the level we expect him to.” They added that “Mike plans to return to a full training schedule in the coming weeks and is eager to return to the ring.” The announcement also confirmed that “a new date for the bout will be announced by next Friday, June 7.” Paul himself posted a video to X, saying he was “heartbroken” and that while he was disappointed about the postponement, he wished Tyson a speedy recovery.
Tyson released a statement about the situation saying, “I want to thank all the fans around the world for their support and understanding during this time. Unfortunately, my ulcer has recurred and my doctors have instructed me to take a few weeks off training to rest and recover. My body is in the best shape it's been since the 1990s and I will be returning to a full training schedule soon. Jake Paul, this may have bought me some time, but in the end I will be knocked out and banned from boxing for good. I thank everyone for their patience and I can't wait to put on an unforgettable performance later this year.”
Stay tuned for the new match schedule.
I don't need to be 100% to beat Jake Paul, but I feel 100% right now.
