If you're planning a trip over Memorial Day weekend, be prepared for large crowds.
According to AAA, about 44 million people plan to head out of town over the holiday, the most travelers since 2005.
The majority of travelers — roughly 38 million people — will drive to their destinations. Another 3.5 million will fly. The Transportation Security Administration said Friday will be the busiest day of the year at airports across the nation.
San Diego International Airport is preparing to welcome 73,000 travelers each day through Tuesday, a 5% increase from last Memorial Day weekend.
The Auto Club encourages travelers to allow extra time to get to the airport.
“Aim to arrive at the airport two hours before for domestic flights and three hours before for international flights,” said AAA spokesperson Annelyne Venegas.
Venegas also urged travelers to download airline apps to receive notification of delays and cancellations and to reserve parking in advance, saying, “Please stay calm, airports will be very busy this weekend.”
The roads will also be congested.
People driving to their destinations are advised to leave early in the morning or late at night to avoid peak crowds, with Venegas saying the best times are before 11 a.m. or after 8 p.m.
It's also important to get plenty of rest and check your car's battery, tyres and fluid levels before heading out, she added.
“Also, always carry an emergency kit,” Venegas said, “with things like phone chargers, water, food, blankets, etc. If you end up stranded on the side of the road, stay in your car. Do not leave your car, as it can be very dangerous.”
