Dallas police continue to search for the driver and passenger of two sports cars involved in a high-speed crash.
The accident occurred Saturday evening on the Central Expressway near University Blvd.
Four other vehicles were involved in the chain reaction, causing injuries and part of the highway being closed for several hours. Days later, the search continues to speak to Super Bowl-winning NFL player Lachie Rice, as questions swirl about his alleged involvement, if any.
Rice, 23, was a second-round pick by the Chiefs last year. He had a notable rookie season during the Chiefs' Super Bowl appearance.
Rice grew up in North Richland Hills and attended Southern Methodist University.
Video from a witness shared with NBC 5 shows two luxury sports cars passing another car at high speed. A black Lamborghini lost control and was the first vehicle to crash into the median. Moments later, dashcam video shows a black Corvette swerve to the right and crash into a silver car and van.
Photos obtained by TMZ Sports show at least five men leaving the scene.
Attorney Kyle Coker said the black SUV belonged to a local luxury rental car company based in Dallas.
“Classic Lifestyle was leasing the vehicle involved in this accident, a 2021 Lamborghini Urus,” Coker told NBC 5. “And we made an agreement with Mr. Rice to provide that lease. And our contract was that we would do that.”There would be only one person driving the vehicle. ”
Coker said the owners of The Classic Lifestyle had a good relationship with Rice. But they haven't heard from him.
“Mr. Rice has rented at least several vehicles in the past, and there have been no driving arrests or related accidents,” Coker said. “The problem we have now is that the vehicle has broken down and we have not heard back yet as to who is going to pay for it. And I understand that there is speculation. ” ”
Rice is also listed as the suspected driver of the Corvette in a police report file obtained by The Dallas Morning News.
On Monday afternoon, Rice's attorney, Lois West, sent a statement to NBC 5.
“On behalf of Lachie Rice, his thoughts are with everyone affected by Saturday's car accident. Lachie is working with local authorities to ensure this situation is dealt with responsibly. We will take all necessary steps. All requests for comment will be directed to his attorneys.'', Royce West of West & Associates, LLP.
However, an email from DPD said that while DPD has been in discussions with Rice's legal team, they still need to speak to Rice directly.
“We can confirm that we have spoken with attorneys, but we have not interviewed anyone who may have been involved in Saturday's accident,” a DPD spokesperson said.
