The storied spot that generations of Chicagoans have relied on for sweets has once again garnered national attention.
Margie's Candies, a legendary candy store founded more than 100 years ago, is one of 25 summer bucket list spots featured in People magazine's 2024 Food and Travel feature, released Friday. Ta.
A place where sweet tooths can get their hands on two of the most sinful of pleasures: candy and ice cream, Margie's has been making candy in-house for years. There are plenty of choices, from the signature English toffee to chocolate caramel, lollipops and truffles.
Visitors to the original location on the corner of Armitage and Western in Bucktown may feel like they've been transported back in time. The decor is reminiscent of the 1920s, from the brown leather-like booths to the wood adorning the walls.
Margie's has created a list for people to “taste a scene-stealing sundae” with specific bucket list items, but of course you can grab whatever catches your eye.
The scene in question was from the acclaimed FX series “The Bear,” starring actor Jeremy Allen White and focusing on an upstart family restaurant in Chicago.
“During Season 2, Chef Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) gets the scoop on the local gourmet scene while visiting Margie's Candies, a 100-year-old candy and ice cream parlor, for a traditional ice cream sundae. Stopping by,” the entry reads. “Viewers hungry for Season 3 (premiering June 27) can run to the booths of their favorite spots or recreate a little magic at home with his recipe for this Sunday. can.”
Margie's may be popular for its ice cream and candy, but those are just its signature items. Margie's also has Italian ice cream, pies, and even sandwiches. The original location may be the best known.
In recent years, Margie's opened a store in Ravenswood (1813 W. Montrose Ave.).
