May 27, 2024 – Global technology leader Lenovo today formally announced that it will join the Government of Canada's Voluntary Code of Conduct for Responsible Development and Governance of Advanced Generative AI Systems as part of its strong commitment to ethical AI development. Lenovo joins eight other new signatories to the commitment, which calls on companies to ensure accountability, safety, fairness and impartiality, transparency, human oversight and monitoring, relevance and robustness.
“By joining the Canadian AI Voluntary Code, Lenovo continues its strong commitment to deploying trusted AI solutions and helping Canada build a responsible AI ecosystem,” said Doug Fisher, senior vice president and chief security officer at Lenovo. “Lenovo has had a strong presence in Canada for many years, and we continue to deepen our commitment here, working to bring smarter AI to everyone.”
“Artificial intelligence is one of the greatest technological transformations of our time, and my government is committed to providing Canadians and Canadian businesses with the tools and funding they need to succeed in this digital age,” said François-Philippe Champagne, Canada's Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. “Our voluntary code of conduct for the responsible development and governance of advanced generative AI systems, combined with a $2.4 billion set of measures from our recent Budget 2024, will ensure Canada's leading organizations are adopting responsible measures that will help build safety and trust as the technology develops into the future.”
Lenovo has also worked on Canada's Voluntary AI Code, following its previous work on UNESCO's Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, the first global standard on AI ethics ratified by 193 member states.
The agreement builds on Lenovo's expanding investments in AI technologies, including proprietary generative AI models, a hybrid AI approach that prioritizes enterprise and individual privacy, security and power, and a pocket-to-cloud portfolio that delivers modern AI to everyone.
Lenovo has a Responsible AI Committee with an internal governance framework that covers ethical, legal, safety and privacy-related concerns to ensure the safe and responsible adoption of new solutions. Lenovo evaluates AI solutions against the committee's pillars of diversity and inclusion, privacy and security, accountability and trust, explainability, transparency, and environmental and social impact.
In addition to the UNESCO Recommendation on AI Ethics, Lenovo has supported several initiatives to strengthen AI to enhance social inclusion. In 2021, Lenovo joined France-based Cercle InterElles' Responsible Gender Equality AI initiative with 12 other companies from the science and technology industry. After a long-standing partnership with the Scott Morgan Foundation, Lenovo continues to support groundbreaking assistive technology solutions developed by NGOs, such as AI-powered avatars for people with severe disabilities. Lenovo's global philanthropy team also launched the “AI for Social Impact” initiative, connecting knowledge and examples to community nonprofits to inspire the use of AI.
Lenovo continues its commitment to bringing smarter technology to everyone through its “AI for All” vision, including an AI-powered solution for real-time translation of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), announced at Tech World 2023.
