Gantz told Prime Minister Netanyahu, “If you choose the path of fanaticism and lead the whole people into the abyss, we will be forced to resign from the government.'' He replied that his “plain words” would mean “the defeat of Israel.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing increasing pressure to end the conflict, and the latest protests in Tel Aviv come just hours after Gantz's ultimatum. Police used water cannon to disperse crowds demanding an end to the conflict and new elections.
What will the election bring?
According to a poll released this weekend by Israel's Channel 12, Prime Minister Netanyahu's approval rating for taking office is 32%, and 35% among voters of the centre-right Likud party. Gantz has an overall job approval rating of 35% and 42% among centre-left voters. A separate poll published by Marib shows Mr Gantz leading Mr Netanyahu as prime minister candidate, 45% to 38%.
In the meantime, Prime Minister Netanyahu is unlikely to relent, and Prime Minister Rafah is likely to further intensify his offensive. He will also rely more on the far-right wing of the coalition to fend off potential challenges from Mr. Gallant and Mr. Gantz.
