SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois State Police have arrested a suspect in bomb threats against two government buildings in April.
Police arrested Gabriel Williams, 23, on Thursday. This was announced after interviews and weeks of research into the threat posed by cell phone data.
Mr. Williams is currently being held in the Sangamon County Jail awaiting trial. She remains innocent until her jury finds her guilty.
ISP first learned about the threat on April 22, when the Illinois Department of Human Services notified the police department's Statewide Terrorism Information Center. Authorities called police about threats at public assistance offices and the state Capitol.
Police activated the State Agency Facilities and Employees (SAFE) threat protocol. The objectives of this plan are:
- Capture, assess, and route threat information
- Investigate threats against state employees, offices, and executives
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of reported content and results
ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly said, “Once ISP received information about this bomb threat, we took immediate action and implemented the SAFE Threat Protocol.” “Deploying ISP resources as quickly as possible will allow our special agents to track down critical information, identify suspects, and make arrests. ISP and our law enforcement partners in Springfield take all threats seriously.” We will track down and arrest those responsible for this criminal activity.”
The Secretary of State's Office (SOS) Capitol Police worked to ensure the Capitol building was empty and secure. ISP and Springfield Police worked to stabilize other buildings while awaiting the arrival of SOS teams.
