As April's historic total solar eclipse approaches, Illinois has issued an emergency travel warning for people planning to witness it in the southern part of the state.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is advising anyone planning to travel through or to the southern part of the state where a total solar eclipse is expected to take urgent precautions. This is the path the solar eclipse will follow starting in the early afternoon of April 8th.
Highways of concern include Interstate 57, which connects to the path of the total solar eclipse, and Interstate 45, which crosses where the eclipse will occur, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Illinois warns if you plan to observe the solar eclipse in the following states: Please do not pull over to the side of the road It doesn't matter if it's a side street, highway, or interstate.
We also advise you to be aware of the following: Headlights must be turned on during totality This is because many vehicles do not automatically turn on their lights quickly enough to ensure safety.
If you find yourself driving during a total Illinois says you shouldn't even think about taking pictures.. As other states have also warned, don't drive while wearing eclipse glasses.
Carbondale, Marion, Illinois and Effingham are expected to be some of the most vibrant cities in the southern part of the state. If you plan to observe the eclipse at or near one of them, be sure to allow extra driving time before and after the total eclipse event.
As this historic sky event approaches, be sure to check the Illinois Department of Transportation's official website for updates to ensure everyone can enjoy it safely and successfully.
