Kyle Walker has won more than 80 caps for England, won the Champions League and captained Manchester City to a Premier League title, but he believes he still has “so much room to grow” as a player.
The defender was making the comments during the premiere episode of BBC Sounds' new podcast, “You'll Never Beat Kyle Walker.”
The 34-year-old said he was not an “overconfident” player, adding: “Everything I've ever had I've always fought for, nothing was just given to me.”
“When I was younger, from about age 9 to 14, I was probably the best player on my team. It took me a while to develop, but then everybody started to improve and everybody started to get faster than me. That was my big thing.”
“I still don't have much confidence in myself. What I've achieved so far is great, but I know I can get better and grow a lot.”
When asked when doubts arise, Walker replied: “Once you step on to the pitch and the whistle blows, the tension goes away and you just go with the flow. If you get into trouble, you look left or right and ask for help from your teammates to get you out of a difficult situation.”
“But if you look at some of our fullbacks, particularly in this country where I've played, I think Joao Cancelo is probably the best fullback I've seen technically.”
“I think, 'I wish I'd worked a little harder on certain things,' but I'm sure some people will look at me and say, 'I wish I had his speed or his strength.'”
