A Transport for London (TfL) spokesman said it regretted the confusion.

“Safety is our number one priority and following inspection we have determined that urgent repairs are required to part of the wall beneath the footbridge on the northbound lanes of the A3 at Tolworth Junction,” a spokesman said.
“The lane closures were necessary to ensure the safety of our infrastructure and the people who use it.”
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to the local area by this incident whilst essential repairs are completed on Saturday evening.”
