One of the main criticisms of the original Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door The problem was the inconsistent fast travel system, which was a pain anyway. That part has been completely reworked, making fast travel easier to access than ever before. Here's how to unlock it:
How to Unlock Fast Travel in Paper Mario: TTYD
In the original Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Fast travel was handled oddly. In the Rougeport Sewers, there was a pipe you could use to get to the central hub area of each chapter, but it wasn't universal. For example, you couldn't fast travel to Glitzville, the central area of Chapter 3, and the pipe you used to fast travel to split into two separate rooms instead of one. This was odd, and didn't do much to reduce backtracking, since you'd have to go through the Rougeport Sewers and fight enemies to get to the pipe.
Thankfully, fast travel has been almost completely reworked in the remaster. To unlock fast travel, you'll need to have Flurry in your party and blow up a fake wall to reveal a door on the second floor of the sewers. The fake wall is right next to a pipe that leads to the third floor. Once you enter the door, the map will start to glow whenever you complete a chapter and present the Crystal Star at the Millennium Door to enter a room. Once you do, numbered pipes will appear on the ground, in a pattern similar to the areas you've completed, indicating where the pipes lead.
To make backtracking even easier, you don't even have to go through the sewers to get to the fast travel room: when you first enter the room, hit the switch next to the door and a pipe will appear in Rougeport Square that will take you to the room. Now you don't even have to fight any enemies when traveling past the level.
